The 71 series

Detroit Diesel is an American manufacturer of two-stroke diesel engines. The number 71 denotes the displacement of a single cylinder (71 cubic inches, about 1.16 litres), and the number before it the number of cylinders and their layout:

These engines power work machines and forestry machinery, boats, generators and snow groomers.

How the parts differ

Air enters the cylinder through ports around the circumference of the liner and is forced in by a Roots blower; some models also have a turbocharger. This makes the cylinder liners a distinctive part of this engine, and the head contains only exhaust valves.

The engine requires an oil specified for two-stroke diesel engines. We carry such oils from Fuchs, Mobil and Shell in our oils and lubricants range. For reliable starting, a sound starter motor is important.
