Which machines

Types of hydraulic pumps

Gear: simple design, common as auxiliary and steering pumps.
Screw: for applications that need a high flow.
Piston: for high pressures; axial piston pumps, often variable displacement, are the main pumps of most excavators.

Cavitation and signs of failure

Most pumps work in an open circuit: the pump draws oil from a tank at atmospheric pressure. There must be no cavitation on the suction side, which is why the suction port has a larger diameter than the pressure port.

When a pump fails, metal particles remain in the system. Before fitting a new pump, have a mechanic flush the system and replace the hydraulic filters, and check the suction line and the oil level.
