What a slewing ring is

A slewing ring is a large toothed bearing between the undercarriage and the upper structure of the machine. It carries the upper structure with the cab, engine and boom and lets it rotate through a full circle.

The slew drive (a hydraulic motor with a reduction gearbox and pinion) engages the teeth of the ring and turns the upper structure. The ring carries large and varying loads, so the precision and safety of the work depend directly on its condition.

Signs of wear

play (wobble) in the upper structure when the boom is raised or lowered
banging, squeaking or crunching when slewing
uneven rotation or sticking in one position
worn, chipped or cracked teeth
a damaged seal, through which grease escapes or dirt gets in

The ring and its teeth must be lubricated regularly as the machine manufacturer instructs. Neglected grease and dirt are the most common cause of premature wear.
