How to measure a rubber track
Three measurements determine the size:
- Width (A): the total width of the track in millimetres.
- Pitch (B): the distance between the centres of two adjacent links (lugs), in millimetres.
- Number of links (C): the total number of links or lugs around the whole circumference.
The size is written as width × pitch × number of links, for example 300 × 52.5 × 80. The marking is often stamped on the inside of the track. Step by step in the guide How to measure a rubber track.
Construction and advantages
Tracks have a continuous steel cord built in, which increases strength and wear resistance.
- good grip on uneven and slippery ground
- less damage to asphalt and concrete than steel tracks
- quieter machine operation
Compared with wheels, tracks cannot be punctured, and they spread the weight of the machine over a larger area, so the machine is less likely to get stuck in soft ground, snow or mud and pushes and pulls better.
When to replace a track
- cracks and cuts that reach the cord
- exposed or broken steel cord
- missing or worn steel inserts
- worn tread, so the machine slips
- the track jumps or comes off even after correct tensioning
Along with the track, check the rollers, drive sprocket and tensioner: worn ones destroy a new track faster.
What to send in an enquiry
- the width × pitch × number of links
- the make and model of the machine
- a photo of the marking on the track, if legible
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure a rubber track?
Measure the width in millimetres, the pitch (the distance between the centres of two links) and count the links. The size is written as width × pitch × number of links.
Where is the size written on the track?
Most often it is stamped on the inside of the track. If it is not legible, measure the width, pitch and number of links.
Do you have a track for my mini excavator?
Probably: we offer more than 400 sizes that cover more than 5,000 machine models. Send the size or the machine model.
Should both tracks be replaced at once?
It is recommended, because a machine with one new and one worn track drives unevenly. If one is damaged and the other is good, only the damaged one is replaced.
