How to measure a rubber track
A rubber track size consists of three numbers: the width (A) in millimetres, the pitch (B) in millimetres and the number of links (C), written as A × B × C. The easiest way is to read them from the marking moulded into the track; if the marking is not visible, measure the width and pitch with a tape measure and count the links.
- Size notation
- width × pitch × number of links
- Widths available
- 150 to 1000 mm
- Sizes available
- over 400
- Warranty
- 6 months
Three measurements: A, B and C
| Code | Measurement | How to measure |
|---|---|---|
| A | Width | Overall width of the track, edge to edge, in mm |
| B | Pitch | Distance between the centres of two adjacent lugs or links, in mm |
| C | Number of links | Total number of links (lugs) around the whole circumference of the track |
Example: 300 × 52.5 × 80 means a width of 300 mm, a pitch of 52.5 mm and 80 links. The order is always the same: width, pitch, number of links.
Step 1: look for the marking on the track
Manufacturers usually mould the size into the rubber, most often on the inside of the track. Clean off the mud and check the whole circumference, as the marking is often in one place only.
- Alongside the size there may also be a manufacturer mark or a guide type code. Photograph everything that is written there.
- If the marking is worn away, measure by hand, but also send a photo of what remains of the marking.
Step 2: measure the width (A)
With a tape measure, measure across the track from the outer edge to the outer edge of the rubber. Measure on a flat section, not where the rubber is damaged or swollen. Write the result down in millimetres.
Step 3: measure the pitch (B)
The pitch is a small number and it is easy to be out by a few millimetres, which is enough for the track not to fit the drive sprocket. So do not measure it over a single gap.
- On the inside, find the lugs (metal inserts or rubber guides).
- Measure the distance from the centre of one lug to the centre of the lug five links further on.
- Divide the result by five.
Example: if the distance over five links is 360 mm, the pitch is 72 mm. Measure in two or three places and compare.
Step 4: count the links (C)
Mark one lug with chalk or a marker and count until you come back to it around the whole circumference. If the track is on the machine, move the machine slowly or count section by section and mark where you stopped. Count twice: an error of one link means a track that cannot be tensioned properly.
What else affects the choice
- Guide type: the layout of the lugs on the inside must match the rollers and the drive sprocket of the machine. Tracks of the same size can have different guides.
- Tread pattern: different patterns suit different ground. A photo of the outer side helps us offer a suitable one.
- Machine model: the make and model, ideally with the serial number, confirm that the size is correct.
The rubber tracks in our range have a continuous steel cord built in, which increases strength and wear resistance.
What to send in your enquiry
- The make and model of the machine (for example a Bobcat, Takeuchi or JCB mini excavator) and the machine serial number.
- The size A × B × C, from the marking or as measured.
- A photo of the marking on the track.
- A photo of the inner side (lugs) and the outer side (tread pattern).
- The quantity: one track or a pair.
You can send your enquiry through the enquiry form or send photos on WhatsApp or Viber to +385 98 894 684. For the range of sizes for mini excavators, see the Rubber tracks page.
When to replace a track
- Steel cord or cracks visible through the rubber.
- Metal inserts that have fallen out or are bent.
- Worn tread, the machine slips on the ground.
- The track jumps the drive sprocket or comes off the rollers even with correct tension.
If the track comes off, also check the rollers, the drive sprocket and the track adjuster. More in our guide When to replace the undercarriage.
Frequently asked questions
How do I read the size of a rubber track?
The size is written as width × pitch × number of links, for example 300 × 52.5 × 80. The width and pitch are in millimetres.
Where is the size marking on the track?
It is usually moulded into the rubber, most often on the inside of the track. Clean the track and check the whole circumference, as the marking is often in one place only.
How do I measure the track pitch accurately?
Measure the distance from the centre of one lug to the centre of the lug five links further on and divide by five. This avoids the error that measuring a single gap gives.
Is it enough to send just the machine model?
The machine model helps, but the same model can have several sizes or guide types. The safest is to send the model, the size and photos of the marking and the inner side.
Which rubber track sizes do you have?
Our range covers over 400 sizes, with widths from 150 to 1000 mm, fitting more than 5000 machine models. For a specific size, send an enquiry.
