When to replace the undercarriage

Replace the undercarriage when the track chain has lost tension that the adjuster can no longer take up, when the sprocket teeth have become pointed, when the rollers leak or do not turn, and when the shoes have lost grouser height. The chain and the drive sprocket wear together, so as a rule they are replaced together, because a new part on a worn one fails quickly.

What the undercarriage consists of

  • The track chain, to which the shoes are fixed with bolts and nuts.
  • Track shoes, which provide traction and carry the machine.
  • Bottom rollers (track rollers), which carry the weight of the machine on the chain.
  • Top rollers (carrier rollers), which support the upper run of the chain so that it does not sag.
  • The drive sprocket, which transmits drive to the chain.
  • The track adjuster (recoil spring) with the idler, which keeps the correct track tension.

Signs of wear, part by part

PartWhat to look for
ChainThe chain pitch has increased (the chain has stretched), the track keeps needing extra tensioning, play on the pins and bushings, bushings worn on the outside.
ShoesLow or worn grousers, cracks, loose or broken bolts, the machine slips on the ground.
Bottom rollersOil leaks, the roller does not turn, flat spots or a worn flange.
Top rollersThey do not turn, oil leaks, the chain drags over them.
Drive sprocketTeeth pointed or bent into a hook shape, the chain jumps or climbs up the teeth.
Track adjuster and idlerIt does not hold tension, grease or oil leaks, a cracked spring, a worn idler.

The exact wear limits (permitted chain pitch, grouser height, roller diameter) are given by the machine manufacturer in the service documentation. Measure against it.

Why they are replaced as a set

The chain and the drive sprocket work as a pair. As the chain stretches, the sprocket teeth wear to match its pitch. A new chain on an old sprocket does not seat properly on the teeth, so both wear quickly and the chain may jump.

  • Replace the chain and the drive sprocket together.
  • Check the rollers when replacing the chain. A worn roller wears out the new chain.
  • Wear on one part damages the others, so putting off one part usually makes the whole undercarriage more expensive.

If you are replacing only one part, tell us the condition of the others and we will assess together whether it pays off.

Track tension: regular checks

Incorrect tension is the most common cause of premature undercarriage wear.

  • An over-tight track loads the pins, bushings, rollers and drive sprocket, so everything wears faster.
  • A track that is too slack slaps, skips teeth and can come off.
  1. Stop the machine on level ground.
  2. Clean the mud and stones out of the undercarriage.
  3. Measure the track sag at the point and in the way specified by the machine manufacturer.
  4. Adjust the tension at the track adjuster, following the instructions.

On muddy or stony ground, check more often. Mud between the parts changes the tension and speeds up wear.

How to extend its life

  • Clean the undercarriage after working in mud, especially in winter.
  • Avoid unnecessary spot turns and long runs in reverse.
  • On a slope, work so that the load is spread evenly over both tracks.
  • Do not drive faster than needed on hard ground.
  • Regularly check the shoe bolts and the rollers for leaks.

What to send in your enquiry

  1. The make, model and serial number of the machine.
  2. The number of chain links and the shoe width.
  3. Photos of the drive sprocket, rollers and track adjuster.
  4. A list of the parts you are replacing.

We supply undercarriage parts for machines of makes such as Caterpillar, Komatsu, New Holland and Fiat Hitachi. For an overview, see the Undercarriage page, and for mini excavators with rubber tracks see how to measure a rubber track.

Warranty

Undercarriage parts carry a 6-month warranty from the invoice date, provided they are fitted at an authorised service centre and no used parts or parts from other manufacturers are used alongside ours. Details are on the Warranty page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know the track chain is worn?

The track keeps needing extra tensioning, the chain pitch has increased and play is visible on the pins and bushings. The exact wear limit is given by the machine manufacturer.

Do I have to replace the drive sprocket along with the chain?

As a rule, yes. The chain and the drive sprocket wear together, and a new chain on a worn sprocket fails quickly and may jump.

How often should I check the track tension?

As the machine manual says, and more often when working in mud or on stony ground. Mud between the parts changes the tension.

When should rollers be replaced?

When they leak oil, do not turn or have a worn flange and flat spots. Check the rollers every time you replace the chain.

Do you have reconditioned track adjusters?

Yes, besides new ones we also have reconditioned track adjusters. Send us the machine model and serial number and we will check what is available.

Replacing the undercarriage?

Send us the machine model and serial number, the number of chain links and photos of the drive sprocket and rollers, and we will put together a quote for the set.

Legal guarantee

Legal guarantee. Minimum two-year legal guarantee protection for goods sold in the European Union. Consumers can claim their rights under the legal guarantee of conformity, for example if goods: do not match the description; do not function as intended. Sellers are liable for any lack of conformity which existed when the goods were delivered, and which becomes apparent within the legal guarantee period. Sellers in such a situation are required to offer: free repair or free replacement; in some cases, a price reduction or full reimbursement. Some countries have a longer legal guarantee period. For second-hand goods, a shorter period may apply, but not less than one year. For more information on your rights in a specific country, scan the QR code below or ask the seller: europa.eu/youreurope/guarantees. What to do if you receive non-conforming goods: 1. Contact the seller as soon as possible to report the issue; 2. Provide proof of purchase, such as a receipt, invoice, or bank statement. Sellers and producers may also offer commercial guarantees, which apply independently from the legal guarantee. For example, you may see this GARAN label representing a commercial guarantee of durability offered by the producer at no additional cost and covering the entire good.

Zakonsko jamstvo.
